Is Rice Gluten Free?

Is Rice Gluten Free?  Do YOU Know What to Look For?

For those of us that need a gluten free diet, we live in a pretty incredible time.  For many, many years, those of us that suffered from gluten intolerance, celiac disease, or the like suffered silently, possibly never finding out what we were dealing with or what was causing our pain.  However, as information about allergies to gluten became more well-known, we have been able to not only figure out what has been affecting us, but how to deal with it.  Couple that with the advent of the internet, and such information is available to almost anybody, meaning living a gluten-free lifestyle is easier than ever.

But as technology and information advances have helped us, they’ve also greatly hindered us…and we might not even know it.

Believe it or not, rice is one such example.  Because many gluten sufferers want to know the same thing – Is Rice Gluten Free“?

Is Rice Gluten Free? Sort Of…

Not being able to deal with the problems that gluten cause, many gluten sufferers of course look for gluten-free alternatives to augment their diet.  Rice is one such alternative.  But as you can imagine, that gets people asking the all-important question:

Is Rice Gluten Free?”

And the answer is….sort of.

I know – a pretty non-committal answer (especially for a simple question – ‘is rice gluten free‘?).  But stick with me for a second…

The actual food itself is indeed gluten free – so you have that going for you.  You no longer have to wonder if is rice gluten free anymore, as all forms of rice are indeed gluten free…

…all forms of rice itself, that is.  But that doesn’t mean all forms of rice foods you buy are gluten free, though.

Huh?  Is Rice Gluten Free Or Not?

I know…this all sounds a bit confusing.  Is rice gluten free or isn’t it?

Rice by itself contains no gluten.  It doesn’t matter if you’re talking about white rice, whole-grain brown rice, basmati rice, or even black rice.  NONE of it has gluten.  So that makes any type of rice potentially safe to eat if you are adverse to consuming gluten.  No more wondering about if rice is gluten free…is there?

However, the issue that you should be concerned about isn’t necessarily is rice gluten free or not – we know that it is.  But it being gluten free doesn’t mean it can’t be prepared in such a way that can still cause you problems.

When you go out to eat, it’s not uncommon for restaurants to cook their rice using chicken stock (broth).  And it’s also not uncommon for chicken stock to have some form of gluten in it.  The chicken stock is absorbed by the rice during cooking, and now, though the rice doesn’t have gluten naturally, it now contains it due to how it was cooked.

See what I mean?  You could be trying to consume a gluten free food, only to not be and not even know it.

Labels – Are You Reading Them to See Is Rice Gluten Free?

There is something else you should be considering the “is rice gluten free” issue:  pre-packaged and prepared foods.

There are a number of rice-based meals and side dishes that you can get that should be mostly rice.  And they likely are, however, it is very likely that the food still contains gluten in it as a form of additive.  (This is very common in rice-based boxed side dishes that you could cook yourself.)  So while you think you’re ‘safe’ eating rice, it’s very possible that you’d be consuming gluten and not even knowing it.

(So much for the question of ‘is rice gluten free’ being a simple answer.)

Something else to watch out for is packaging that makes mention of “no gluten added”.  Normally, you’d think this would be a good thing, right?  Now while the company isn’t going to lie to you – if it says they didn’t add gluten, then they didn’t add gluten.  However, that doesn’t mean there isn’t some foodstuffs in the meal that didn’t naturally contain gluten already – even if rice is the main ingredient.

So you’d still be consuming gluten…and once again, you wouldn’t know it.

Is Rice Gluten Free – What Should I Do?

I know it can get frustrating that something as simple as rice can still raise such issues with gluten…especially when rice doesn’t even contain gluten in the first place!

There are three main things concerning if is rice gluten free I can recommend that I think will help you, though:

  1. Learn to read labels.  This has helped tremendously in my grocery shopping.  Gluten is pretty easy to spot on a list of ingredients, and you’d really be surprised just how many foods do have gluten in them…even when you think they wouldn’t.  And to the contrary, there are many foods that are gluten free that don’t make mention of it. So learn to read labels to see if is rice gluten free…inform yourself.
  2. Be picky about what you order in restaurants.  I’m sure you do this already, but don’t just order anything.  Since you don’t know how a restaurant cooks, you can’t be for sure if is rice gluten free.  Ask questions about how they prepare foods, and when in doubt, don’t wonder if their is rice gluten free…just order something else.
  3. Pick up Felicity’s Gluten Free Handbook

Felicity’s Gluten Free Handbook – “Is Rice Gluten Free?” is One of Many Things I Learned…

Not that long ago, I was TOTALLY clueless about how to lead a gluten free lifestyle.  All I knew was that I was in pain all the time, and when I was diagnosed with my gluten allergy, I knew I was going to have to make some changes.  Problem was that I had no idea what I was doing, what kind of changes I needed to make, and where I needed to go for information.

Enter Felicity’s Gluten Free Handbook.

A friend of a friend had recommended Felicity’s program to me (she was also wondering if is rice gluten free), so I decided to check it out.  It was pretty cheap, and I figured if I just learned a few things that I could apply to my newly-needed gluten free lifestyle, then it’d be worth it.

When I picked it up, I was seriously blown away.

“Is rice gluten free?” was actually one of the first questions I had when I got the handbook, and I couldn’t believe all the detailed information it had about rice…and LOTS of other foods as well.

I learned all about:

  • history of gluten, how it makes you sick, and its relationship to celiac disease
  • what to eat in the place of bread…and bread you *can* eat (<-this was great for me…I love sandwiches, LOL)
  • how to read labels and order your food at restaurants (<-this is what I was talking about above…I learned it from Felicity)
  • what to do if you eat gluten on accident (<-this happened to me once…I couldn’t believe the difference)
  • plenty of gluten free recipes and alternatives
  • gluten free snacks

This honestly is just the short-list though.  When I got Felicity’s Gluten Free Handbook, I was also surprised at the bonuses I got.  I didn’t even necessarily use them all (like the massage book) but the ‘modern health’ and ‘personal development’ bonus materials were so good that I would have honestly paid for them separately.

Don’t Wonder “Is Rice Gluten Free” (or Anything Else) Anymore

Here’s what I want you to do – click on the picture below, so you can read about Felicity’s Gluten Free Handbook for yourself.  It made an AMAZING difference in my life, health, well-being, and in turn, overall happiness.  After getting it, I immediately turned around and recommended it to one of my Facebook friends who also deals with gluten issues, and after she got it, she couldn’t believe the difference it made in her life, too.

I think you’ll be very surprised at everything you learn from Felicity, and how you can change your life for the better with her handbook.  You’ll never have to wonder “Is Rice Gluten Free”…or any other food, for that matter…ever again.
